In the United Nations Millennium Declaration adopted in September 2000, the United Nations have defined eight "the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) » which aim to improve the living conditions of the poor and to build a better world by 2015.
The international community agreed to implement the necessary means to halve the fraction of the world’s population without access to water and sanitation by 2015. Almost 900 million people still lack access to safe drinking water and 2.5 billion people still lack access to basic sanitation.
